SLEX appeared on the On The Turnbuckle podcast to talk to the hosts about is career, with the highlight being his chat about how he evolved into his current “The Business” character.
“The last 12 months have been really exciting and I feel like when I went away from wrestling for a little bit, I had to reassess and come back better. I didn’t want to come back and be who I was. I was watching guys like Adam Brooks and Jonah Rock. They had not only the wrestling but the character as well.
So that was a big move and a big change for me. I had to think about how I presented myself in the best way to interact with the crowd more and get more of a response. So I came back with the intention of coming back not only in ring, but as the best all round performer I could be.
It took a little while for (the sunglasses) to get over, but I’ve been around a while so I was confident in my ability not to worry to much if the fans were responding. Most people, when they break into the business, and you’re a wrestler, you’re so self conscious you think “oh their not responding” so you’ve got to change what you do every single time you go out there.
When I came back with this character, I decided that everything I did was going to be the same. The entrance, the way I walk, every little thing I do is going to be the exact same. So I didn’t really veer away from it and then over time it just grew and sort of caught on.
No I didn’t think it would get to this (level of popularity) but I was hopeful.”
Thanks to the change in character, SLEX would go on to gain not only more popularity in his home in Melbourne Australia, but also catch international eyes. SLEX now is part of the Ring of Honor (ROH) roster, and no doubt when Covid restrictions allow, will continue to represent Australian wrestling on their TV series.
