WWE wrestler and fellow Aussie Brendan Vink, real name, announced on October 26 that he was changing his ring name to Tony Modra. It appeared as if the Adelaide native was paying tribute to one of his favourite football players by taking on his name. However, this sparked some controversy as the ‘real’ Modra, former AFL star, fired back with his thoughts on the name change.
“I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t know you had to copyright your own bloody name.” Modra told The Advertiser. He continued by stating that Vink never asked for permission to use his name. Modra found this action disappointing and disrespectful as he felt that it was for personal gain rather than a sign of admiration.
Vink hasn’t responded to Modra’s comments as of yet.
