AEW has just announced that Mike Tyson is making his return to the company on this week’s May 7th episode of Dynamite.
Aside from an online press release announcing his appearance, no further details were given in regard to Tyson’s role for the show. However, with NXT Stand and Deliver Night 1 taking place head to head against Dynamite, it makes sense that AEW is choosing now as the time to bring back the boxing star.
Speaking with Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, AEW President Tony Khan had the following to say regarding his relationship with Tyson.
“I talk to Mike regularly. I talked to him often as he was training for [Roy Jones Jr.] and then I caught up with him right after the fight and he’d said he wanted to find a good date to come back to AEW, and I said 100% yes, we’ll find a good date that works for everyone, so I’d kept that in mind. And then when we were catching up a few days ago, I mentioned that it felt like this would be a great date for him to come in if he’d be free, and he said he’d love to come.”
Tyson has made two previous appearances for AEW, both of which took place last May, in which he presented Cody Rhodes with the TNT Championship at Double or Nothing and participated in a brawl with Chris Jericho and the Inner Circle the following Dynamite.
“Obviously, the idea is to do something more” said Chris Jericho in a 2020 interview with ESPN’s Marc Raimondi. Jericho was confident in the two making any scenario from a boxing match to street fight successful, “Whatever he feels comfortable with, I can make it good.”
What’s important to note is that both those appearances took place without fans in attendance, making Tyson’s return his first with a live crowd for the promotion. No matter what Iron Mike gets up to on Dynamite, it’s sure to steal headlines and maybe even blossom into a long term feud.
