News had swirled around for a few weeks that two of PWA‘s brightest stars were WWE-bound, but of course, nothing is official until WWE themselves put it out there. That day has arrived. WWE have announced the signing of Matty Wahlberg and Steph De Lander amongst a group of international recruits to the WWE Performance Center. Also notable among the list of new signees is Sarray, who made her NXT TV debut this past week already, defeating Zoey Stark.
WWE offered the following information in short blurbs about Wahlberg and SDL. Time will tell if they will retain their current wrestling names- like Indi Hartwell– or have to change it up- like Bronson Reed (FKA Jonah Rock):
Matt Farrelly of Sydney, Australia, is a former history teacher with experience in the ring and on reality television. He competed on “Australian Survivor: Champions vs. Contenders” in 2019.
Stephanie De Landre of Sydney, Australia, has a background in dance and soccer, and has been a standout on the independent wrestling scene down under.
Wahlberg & De Lander both began their professional wrestling careers in 2017. Gaining experience all around the Australian independent scene, they primarily called PWA (Pro Wrestling Australia) in Sydney home. Wahlberg’s biggest career achievement to date has been winning the 2019 Colosseum Tournament, which included AEW star Orange Cassidy and former NXT UK wrestler Travis Banks. De Lander- who started wrestling under a mask as FaceBrooke- soon shed it to become the Python Powerhouse. She was a feature attraction in PWA, most notably headlining in a Steel Cage match against Jessica Troy for the PWWA Championship, but ultimately captured championship gold down in Melbourne, winning the MCW Women’s Championship.
Matty & Steph made their final Aussie wrestling appearances at PWA It Started Out With A Kiss, both entering the PWA Rumble in the main event. Wahlberg started the Rumble at #1 and went coast to coast, battling long-time rival Mick Moretti before getting eliminated by Osborne, the Rumble winner. De Lander had a memorable interaction with her real-life boyfriend Rat Daddy, eliminating the Adelaide import from the match before later getting taken out by Lyrebird Luchi.
We at Snap Mayors wish Matty Wahlberg and Steph De Lander all the success in the world as they embark on this new and exciting stage of their careers. We are sure they will make Australia proud!
